Promoting“Innovation”with“Digitalization”: Theoretical Logic and Empirical Analysis of Digital Labor Empowering the Improvement of Total Factor Productivity

Abstract:The construction of data commodity and service trading platforms embodies digital labor,which is the practical integration of digital workers and digital means of production.It also represents the process of transforming living labor into materialized labor under the conditions of socialized production in the digital era.This paper matches micro-level variables of A-share listed companies with macro-level variables of cities from 2011 to 2023 based on the registered locations and city codes of listed companies.Empirical tests show that digital labor has a positive impact on TFP,mainly through two mechanisms:enhancing the level of digital-physical integration and promoting the agglomeration of high-tech industries.Heterogeneity tests reveal that:(1)In regions with higher levels of computing power scheduling and information infrastructure construction,digital labor can significantly improve TFP.(2)In regions with higher degrees of market integration,digital labor positively affects TFP through digital-physical integration.(3)In regions with higher levels of innovation ecology,digital labor positively affects TFP through the agglomeration of high-tech industries.
