Abstract:The development of integrated clusters of strategic emerging industries is a core way for China to foster new drivers of economic growth. This paper constructs an evaluation index system for integrated cluster development of strategic emerging industries, and adopts panel data of 30 provincial-level regions in China from 2013 to 2023 to measure its development level. On this basis, the Dagum Gini coefficient method and kernel density estimation are employed to explore the regional disparities and dynamic evolution laws of such development. The empirical results indicate that:First, the overall development shows a steady upward trend during the sample period, presenting a typical spatial pattern of being high in the east and low in the west.Regionally, the eastern region boasts the highest development level and the fastest growth rate.Obvious gaps also exist among different provinces. In terms of dimensional indicators, average industrial innovation convergence maintains a relatively high level.Second, the overall regional disparity presents a significant rising trend, with transvariation density acting as the primary source of disparity. Both inter-regional and intra-regional Gini coefficients keep increasing, which means that intra-regional and inter-regional gaps across the whole country and four major regions are continuously widening.Third, kernel density estimation results reveal that except for the Northeast China, the development level nationwide and in eastern, central and western regions all rises in a fluctuating manner.Nevertheless, internal regional disparities have been expanding in all areas, and the degree of polarization and ladder effect also changes differently across regions.
