The Impact of Open Participation Degree on Innovation Performance of Digital Open Source Community

Abstract:As a new model of open innovation,digital open-source communities integrate heterogeneous resources through free,voluntary,and autonomous open participation mechanisms to achieve high-value innovation performance.Their organizational resilience becomes increasingly prominent in turbulent environments,while open-source licensing regulations serve as institutional carriers to ensure the smooth operation of the innovation process.Based on the top 300 projects in GitHub's global open-source collaboration intensity in 2022,the study examines the direct impact of the breadth and depth of open participation on the innovation performance of digital open-source communities,the mediating effect of organizational resilience,and the moderating effect of open-source licensing regulations.The findings reveal the followings.①Both the breadth and depth of open participation significantly promote the innovation performance of digital open-source communities.②Organizational resilience partially mediates the relationship between open participation and innovation performance.③The restrictiveness of open-source licensing and patent licensing clauses negatively moderate the promoting effect of open participation breadth on innovation performance,while positively moderating the effect of open participation depth.Based on these findings,the study proposes managerial implications,such as improving the open-source ecosystem,enhancing collaborative development mechanisms,establishing security mechanisms and leveraging the role of intellectual property rules.
