The Impact Mechanism of Funding Intensity on Academic Output of Outstanding Scientific Talents

Abstract:Outstanding scientific talents are pioneers in raising critical questions for scientific and technological development,and they form a core force in guiding forward-looking scientific and technological planning and driving original innovation.Sustained and stable funding support is a crucial guarantee for their rapid growth.However,as the Matthew Effect becomes increasingly prominent during the cultivation of such talents,how to scientifically evaluate the marginal utility of funding and ensure the effectiveness and rationality of investment has become an urgent issue to address.This study took 1880 recipients of top-level sci-tech rewards as research subjects.By empirically analyzing the dynamic evolution of academic output under funding support,this research delved into differential impact mechanisms of funding intensity,disciplinary attributes,and host institutions on academic performance.The findings indicated that as funding from the National Natural Science Foundation of China increases,the comprehensive academic output of outstanding scientific talents significantly improved.However,the marginal benefits of academic output exhibited an initially rising and then declining trend.Moreover,the patterns of academic output varied across different disciplines and institutions.Therefore,it was essential to take into account disciplinary and institutional positioning to thoroughly understand the relationship between funding investment and academic output for different types of outstanding scientific talents.By optimizing the investment structure and implementing targeted strategies,China can shift its funding pattern from extensive growth model to intensive efficiency model.
