Competitive Funding and Research Output:An Empirical Study Based on 622 Universities

Abstract：Based on the data of 622 universities in China from 2010 to 2017,this paper empirically tests the impact of competitive funding on research output in universities.We find that the competitive funding of universities is positively associated with their research output.Simultaneously,the competitive funding can generate more research output in 985、211 universities than other normal universities.The positive link between competitive funding and research output appears to be heterogeneous across various disciplines.Further analysis shows that the opportunity of collaboration with top universities can enhance the positive impact of competitive funding on research output in universities.The study not only contributes to the literature on scientific research funding and academic output,but also has a strong enlightenment for universities to actively seek funding from enterprises and improve their own research output efficiency.
