Abstract:International collaboration drives scientific and technological progress and innovation.This study utilizes data from research papers in materials science and engineering,employing propensity score matching to examine the impact of international collaboration on both academic and societal influence.The findings reveal that international collaborations significantly enhances the academic and societal impact of papers in materials science and engineering.Specifically,papers co-authored through bilateral partnerships demonstrate higher academic influence than those from multilateral collaborations,while multilateral partnerships exhibit greater societal impact compared to bilateral ones.Notably,collaborations with Singapore,Australia,the United States,and Germany show particularly outstanding performance.Consequently,China should boost funding for international research partnerships,build high-caliber platforms,innovate cooperation models,and accelerate academic and social benefits enhancement as well as scientific achievement translation and application.
