The Establishment of Overseas R&D Institutions and Corporate Innovation-From the Perspective of the Global Innovation Network

Abstract:The networked characteristics of global innovation activities have become increasingly prominent.Establishing overseas R&D institutions is a crucial path for Chinese enterprises to integrate into the global innovation network and enhance their innovation competitiveness.Taking A-share listed companies as research samples,this study collects and organizes information on the establishment of overseas R&D institutions by sample enterprises from 2010 to 2015 from the Public Directory of Recorded Overseas Investment Enterprises(Institutions)issued by the Ministry of Commerce.Patent texts of sample enterprises are extracted from the United States Patent and Trademark Office(USPTO)database,and a global innovation network facilitating knowledge flow at the micro level is constructed based on patent citation information.Having employed the propensity score matching-difference-in-differences(PSM-DID)model,this paper empirically investigates the impact of establishing overseas R&D institutions on corporate innovation and its underlying mechanisms within the framework of the global innovation network.The findings are as follows:first,establishing overseas R&D institutions effectively promotes corporate innovation by increasing firms' embeddedness in the global innovation network;second,the full realization of the network embedding effect driven by overseas R&D institutions relies on a sound institutional environment in the host country;third,the number of overseas R&D institutions is not necessarily the more the better,but rather should be within an appropriate range.
