Abstract This paper classifies business model innovation into two types,namely efficiency-centered business model innovation and novelty-centered business model innovation.It develops a conceptual model to explore the effect of business model innovation on firm's financial performance by using market performance as the mediator and environmental uncertainty as the moderator.An empirical study with a sample of 133 firms is conducted in one province in China.These results show that both efficiency-centered and novelty-centered business model innovation have a positive effect on market performance and financial performance,while the directly impact on financial performance of efficiency-centered business model innovation is greater than novelty-centered business model innovation.Then,market performance partly mediates the relationship between business model innovation and financial performance,while environmental uncertainty negatively moderates the relationship between novelty-centered business model innovation and market performance and the relationship with financial performance.
