Abstract Based on the survey of 216 R&D institutions of US enterprises in China,we used the methods of factor analysis to study the R&D strategy of origination and evolution.The results shows that the R&D strategic motivation can be divided into four types:market development and integrated resources,technology and the opportunity to explore,product improvement and technical support as well as the global product development.The technology spillover between R&D institution of American enterprise and Chinese innovation organization would be limited obviously because of the R&D strategy motivation
