Abstract In the particular context of the transition period, this paper theoretically analyzes the relationship between firm heterogeneity and market environment and studies the underlying mechanisms of ownership heterogeneity characteristics and the market environment in the regional level.Using the statistics data of China's manufacturing firms in 2001—2009, the paper has made an empirical study on differences in the response of regional total factor productivity to the market allocation efficiency environment from the view of firm ownership heterogeneity.The results showed that the sensitivity of the state-owned enterprises in the environment for technology innovation and market efficiency is lower than that of private enterprises, and there are significant regional differences.The sensitivity of state-owned enterprises in the environment for their own scale economies is lower than that of private enterprises, but there are no significant regional differences.The inefficiency allocation of state-owned enterprises on the production factors reduces the efficiency of regional economic growth.
