Abstract To carry out basic research activities is an important approach which can improve the original innovation ability.In order to strengthen the construction of basic research environment in China and create a good scientific research ecology which is conducive to basic research,it is necessary and possible to analyze the basic research activities within the theoretical framework of ecosystem.Basic research ecosystem is a complex system of dynamic evolution and a subsystem of innovation ecosystem,which is composed of research subject and research environment.It has four characteristics including complexity,self-organization evolution,controllability and boundary fuzziness.The analysis of its operation includes four aspects named as operation motive force,energy source,energy flow and operation guarantee.
