Abstract This paper studies the relationship between urbanization,technological innovation and urban-rural income gap by using panel data of Chinese prefecture-level cities from 2003 to 2013,we find that urbanization broadened the urban-rural income inequality;technological progress narrowed the urban-rural income gap,and technological innovation could be looked as an important mediator variable between urbanization and urban-rural income gap.We also find that the city's degree of marketization and industrialization was negatively correlated with the urban-rural income inequality.
