Enterprise's Technological Innovation Capability and Open Innovation Strategy

Abstract:Open innovation can help enterprises integrate external innovation resources across organizational boundaries,so as to achieve the goal of meeting innovation needs quickly and improving innovation efficiency.However,as an innovation paradigm,the logic and dynamic law of the evolution of open innovation has not been fully summarized in theory.Based on the perspective of technological innovation capability,this paper compares four typical enterprises which implement open innovation,Haier,Huawei,P&G and Boeing,and explores how the technological innovation capability of enterprises and open innovation strategy are“smartly match”.It is found that,as measured by technological distance,technological efficiency and technological reserves,the development of technological innovation capability went through three stages,namely,the technology catching-up stage,the technology synchronization stage and the technology leading stage.Based on knowledge flow,open control,degree of open and open mode,there are three types of open innovation:positive,robust and prudent.In technology catching-up stage,we should choose positive open innovation while paying attention to absorptive capacity cultivation.In technology synchronization stage,we should choose robust open innovation while enhancing the independent innovation capability.In technology leading stage,we should choose prudent open innovation while building innovative resources governance capability.The technological innovation capability of an enterprise is the basis of open innovation strategy,and the implementation of the matching open innovation strategy will promote the upgrading of enterprises' technological innovation capability,both of which are in the process of helix ascension.
