Abstract This paper built an analytical framework“absorptive capacity-firm R&D portfolio-innovation performance”for empirically testing relations between portfolio of firm R&D and innovation performance based on the view of absorptive capacity.It employed the firm level panel data of Chinese innovative(high-tech)manufacturing firms over the period of 2008—2011 and structure equation.Results show that absorptive capacity has a significant positive impact only on portfolio of firm R&D which includes R&D internationalization.And R&D portfolio of diverse firm improves the performance of breakthrough innovation and portfolio of firm R&D only including R&D internationalization can enhance the performance of incremental innovation.And basically the moderating role of absorptive capacity is insignificant.These conclusions can give advices to firms on how to integrate into global innovation network.
