Abstract In the era of globalization, companies' competition strategy is often closely integrated into the national strategy. As the core components of the implementation of national intellectual property strategy, companies' R&D capacities and abilities to acquire patents worldwide not only determine companies' competitive status in the market, but also affect their own countries' international competitiveness. This paper begins from the introduction of national intellectual property strategy of China and Japan, analyzes the global patent competition between Chinese and Japanese companies, and focuses on the competitive situation in new energy industry which will become the most competitive division in the future. And then it further points out that patent competition will eventually develop into the game of independent innovation. The next decade will be critical for Chinese companies if they plan to gradually catch up with their Japanese counterparts.
