Abstract On the basis of the literature review, this paper proposes the conceptual model of the relationship among knowledge network characteristics, the process of knowledge management and first-class disciplines of innovative university generation and verifies this model by the survey of the seven disciplines of nine strong science and engineering universities.The results showed that the external network elements of discipline promote first-class disciplines of innovative university generation by the discipline knowledge management process.External knowledge networks centrality to knowledge production, trust to knowledge application, and shared vision to knowledge production are not significantly affected.
