Abstract  Based on trade agreement data from the DESTA database, this article tests the impact of the deepening network of free trade agreement (FTA)on the development of digital trade.Research shows that the deepening network centrality of FTA has a significant positive effect on digital trade. In terms of heterogeneity, “Telecommunications, computer and information services”are the most affected by the deepening network status of FTA,while “Insurance and pension services”are the least affected.Further research has found that a major challenge facing China is that China imports more from economies with higher status in the deepening network of FTA.In terms of segmented products,China's imports of digital services such as “Telecommunications, computer and information services”and “Intellectual property fees”mostly come from countries with higher status in the deepening network of FTA.Moreover, the higher the network status, the more telecommunications and intellectual property services China imports from these economies. The research conclusion of this article provides useful policy insights on how to promote the development of digital trade in China in the context of building a global network of high standard free trade zones.
